The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not just the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
