Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these treatments should be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something activating and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
