Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Wins Maiden Championship in Nearly 30 Months
19 of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one victories have been earned on hardcourt
A comeback Daniil Medvedev claimed his first title for 882 days with a win over Corentin Moutet in the tournament title decider.
The Russian, a ex- number one, has had a challenging year, achieving just one match at the big events and undergoing a meltdown at the New York tournament.
His varied form on the tennis tour - and struggles with his service game in especial - caused him dropping out of the world's top 10 and finally separating with long-term mentor Cervara.
Now working with his coach and his other coach, he has steadily advanced in the past month - climaxing in a closely contested 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over Frenchman Moutet.
This represents his maiden title since the Rome competition and first on a hard court after spring of that year.
The win also means the Russian has won twenty-one titles at twenty-one distinct tournaments.
"For the first time I have attended a tournament with my both daughters simultaneously, so to secure a championship is really nice," commented ranked player the champion.
"This title is in tribute of my child her name, because the initial championship I got when my first daughter my daughter was born was for her."
The athlete, the former major winner, had been defeated in his past six championship matches, including in the German tournament in the past months.
His counter-punching approach and recurring outbursts on the tennis court had caused observers to question if his skill to perform at the top level was finished.
However the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in recent weeks, making an effort to approach the net and play assertively, backed up by an improved serving game.
Medvedev came back from a disadvantage in the opening set against the difficult opponent, securing 4 of the final five games to go ahead.
The competitors swapped service breaks in the following set before the Frenchman, attempting for his first tour championship, gained dominance to force a decider.
Moutet rescued 4 early-game break points in a close third set before the champion won the break to 15 to close out the victory.
Fittingly, he secured victory with a point at the net area, with Moutet failing to handle a return after over two and a half hours.
