Just as Storm Claudia tore through the north-west the previous evening, City swept United away at the their home ground. It was a convincing three goal win for the City coach's side thanks to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their championship potential as they consolidated their place at the top of the table.

Back-to-Back Losses for Manchester United

This scoreline represented back-to-back league defeats for the United manager's side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, placing them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their championship aspirations hanging by a thread.

United’s capability to manage league and continental soccer with a small roster has been a widely debated subject since they secured entry to the European competition. Looking at the calendar, it always appeared this was the matchday that would truly test this fortitude. Unfortunately for the opposition, they appeared weary throughout, the memorable win against PSG clearly having had an impact.

Tactical Shifts

Marc Skinner had tried to make changes with a a few adjustments. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all brought freshness, although the dropping of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the sidelines raised a few eyebrows.

Manchester City, in opposition, have fewer fitness concerns. Andrée Jeglertz made a single alteration from last week’s win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since recovering from injury.

Overpowering Start

The storm clouds started to build for Skinner and his team from the kickoff. This was a demonstration of the power from City whose energetic attack played with and pulled the visitors apart with a sublime initial 45 minutes performance that saw them net a trio in 21 minutes.

Early Chances

Second Half

The clearest change came from the United manager at the interval as Malard was introduced for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to shift the momentum of the game. Former Manchester City player Jess Park came most likely to score, rattling the woodwork, but the visitors were offensively poor and were unable to produce a one shot on goal.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have increased their cushion when a delightful Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the winning team. Having failed to beat any team who ended above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have wins against Arsenal and Manchester United to put them in a commanding situation after the opening fixtures.
